Giving Thanks and Family.

I flew my little butt to Detroit on Wednesday to celebrate Thanksgiving with the Birkhold family. Cousin Matt flew in from New York, cousin Alex from Boston, cousins Stephanie and Tim from Chicago and sister Erica from East Lansing — she didn’t fly.

Alex picked me up from the airport and we headed straight to the thriving metropolis of Grosse Pointe to rekindle high school memories and chug $6 pitchers of Coors Light in the traditional Thanksgiving eve ritual. 5:00 AM in the morning later, we decide to call it a night after solving the objective vs. subjective problems of the world.

The feast followed the next day and Aunts and Uncles infiltrated. Even though all of us of Generation Three are well into adulthood, we were still designated to the kids table, complete with booster seats. We ate, we played dress up in the basement where the 80s went to die, we played marathon games of the classic Milton Bradley Guess Who, we watched the Lions lose, we passed unfair judgments on the neighbors, discussed our double-letter theory and eventually put on a SHOW in the kitchen with the ritual cleanup. No slugging wine out of bottles this year, however.

All in all, great Thanksgiving and so far good times from the great state of Michigan.

Stay tuned.

Sunday Funday and Being Thankful.

After partying for pretty much an entire day and night, there is nothing better than waking up the following morning and continuing the trend. What’s the saying… “Hair of the dog that bit you”?

And with football and warm weather, nothing says Sunday Morning Afternoon like a little Cee-Lo to start things off, Bottomless Mimosas at Root Down, Buck Hunter at The Horseshoe Lounge and a DETROIT LIONS WIN!

That’s right, I said win. My dearly beloved Lions chalked another one up in the “W” column yesterday. Granted, it was over the horrific Cleveland Browns, but none the less. And MVP of that game? My man, Matt Stafford. He is the youngest quarterback ever to throw five touchdown passes in one game. Not only that, but he bounced back from a huge hit that put his left shoulder out of commission to nail the fifth TD pass to fellow rookie Brandon Pettigrew. I mean, who needs a left shoulder when you throw with your right? Duh.

Pride of Detroit. L-R: Derrick Williams, Brandon Pettigrew and Matthew Stafford.

Additionally, since this is the start of Thanksgiving week just a quick shout out to what I’m thankful for:

1. Detroit Lions Victory.

2. Not drinking red drinks at City Hall.

3. Snow.

4. Jess Werner

5. Lesley Betts

Still rooting for the home team.

It’s rare that the Detroit Lions are on national television here in Denver. But today, I was in luck. They were playing NFC North rival Minnesota and with so much hype surrounding Brett Farve and the Vikings, FOX thought it pertinent to air the game. So, I donned my favorite Lions attire and settled in with a bottle of Pyramid Apricot Ale. It wasn’t long, however, until I was once again crushed by the lesser play of the Lions in comparison to the on-fire Vikings.

Matt Stafford and I.

But, I refuse to be a fair-weather fan, and will stick by my home team and the potential Stafford, Johnson and Smith have until the day I die. So to the boys in white today, I say play on, and I’ll be rooting.

Wiki Races..

As much fun as partying is, I’m partied out at the moment. Birthday celebrations and opening day antics have rendered me couch ridden on this Friday night. So, how to fill my time?

Wiki Races.

Take two unrelated subjects and see how fast you can get from one to the other with links. I started at “five pillars of Islam” and navigated my way to “Alice in wonderland”. Pretty fun! Learned quite a bit along the way, as well: Amazons were a mythological tribe of female warriors and Lewis Carroll is a pen name.

Next step: challenge @harvitronix, my fellow couch dweller, to a duel. Who can get from “Nebraska” to “LA Clippers” the fastest? (Harvey won that round.) and voilà! Wiki Races is born. Challenge a friend today.

Ice Skating in Hell?.

Pick up hockey games should be quite a bit easier in Lucifer’s kingdom… because hell has frozen over; I started a blog. Not only that, but I also started twitting, or tweeting, or twatting… or whatever it’s called. If you’re bored beyond measure and want to check that out, you can find me at twitter.com/nicolebirkhold.

But in all reality, blogging could be fun. I have yet to experience it, as thus far it’s been more of a headache than anything else trying to get it all set up. Big thanks to @harvitronix for being incredibly patient with me and essentially creating the masterpiece you see before you. He’s also a great DJ, you should hire him.

The reason for this whole new delve into trendy social media exploits? Hard to say, other than I was beginning to feel left out… and old. And no one wants to feel old.

So friends, co-workers, and awkward internet stalkers… feel free to follow, leave comments, re-tweet or simply ignore me as I explore the Wild West that is the internet.

PS… Rhymes with Nog, as in the frothy, mildly alcoholic drink served during the yuletide made with eggs.
